Rediscovering the Joy of Reading: How a Week Without My Phone Sparked a Literary Revival

There was a time when reading was a daily escape, a window to other worlds that offered calm and adventure. But like many, I found myself caught in the endless scroll of my phone, losing touch with that joy. Then I heard about a friend who read over 70 books in a year. That inspired me to try something different: a week without my phone. What happened next surprised me and reminded me why books matter.

The Phone-Free Challenge and Its Impact

Phones are designed to keep us scrolling, but that constant distraction can steal time from meaningful activities like reading. Without my phone for a week, I found pockets of time I didn’t realize I had. Instead of reaching for my device, I reached for books. This simple change helped me slow down and reconnect with stories and ideas that had been waiting for me.

During that week, I read four books that each offered something unique:

  • The Quiet Moon: This book gently guides readers through the phases of the moon, encouraging a return to ancient rhythms and mindfulness. Its soft writing style invites you to slow down and notice the world around you.

  • Just About Coping: Written by a psychologist, this book blends personal stories with client experiences. It offers insight into why people seek therapy and how they navigate mental health challenges. It was a gift from a friend, showing how sharing books can be a meaningful way to connect.

  • Gisèle Pelicot’s memoir: A powerful and emotional read, this book shares wisdom and courage through honest storytelling. It challenges the stigma around shame and offers strength to those facing difficult experiences.

  • The Names: My favorite fiction read of the year so far. It tells a clever sliding doors story about a woman escaping domestic violence, weaving three narratives together. It’s a gripping book you can finish in a day.

Why Reading Matters More Than Ever

Reading offers more than entertainment. It provides:

  • Mental escape from daily stress and noise

  • Empathy and understanding by seeing the world through others’ eyes

  • Focus and calm in a distracted world

  • Knowledge and inspiration to grow personally

Phones and screens often fragment our attention, making it harder to dive deeply into a story or idea. Books invite us to pause, reflect, and immerse ourselves fully.

How to Bring Reading Back Into Your Life

If you want to rediscover reading, here are some practical tips:

  • Set small goals: Start with one book a month or even a few pages a day.

  • Create a reading space: Find a quiet, comfortable spot free from distractions.

  • Limit phone use: Try phone-free times, especially before bed or during meals.

  • Share books with friends: Giving and receiving books can motivate you and build connection.

  • Choose books that excite you: Whether fiction, memoir, or self-help, pick what sparks your interest.

Keeping the Momentum Going

After my phone-free week, I slipped back into scrolling. It’s easy to fall into old habits. That’s why I’m asking for book recommendations to keep the momentum going. Reading is a habit that needs nurturing, and sharing suggestions helps build a community of readers.

If you have a book that changed your perspective or simply kept you turning pages, please send it my way. Together, we can create a list of stories that inspire, challenge, and comfort.

Books have the power to transform how we see the world and ourselves. Taking a break from my phone reminded me of that power and sparked a literary revival in my life. If you feel stuck in the scroll, try stepping away and picking up a book. You might find a new favorite story or rediscover an old love.
